HoloLens 2 - Designing an app for kids
A HoloLens 2 has been in my home/office for four months now. It is a much-valued piece of hardware because it's very comfortable to wear, and the overall UX is excellent. My small human and I both prefer this HMD over all the others in our technology collection. However, there's not much to do in it for fun once you are there.
A mom and kiddo design challenge
The small human's requirements:
- Interactive AR. It's not good enough to look at something pretty. One must be able to interact with the digital reality.
- Whole house play. There's nothing so tiring as having to stand in the same spot for ages. The kiddo wants persistent AR while in session. No dropping off of elements because one leaves the room.
- Nature simulation/game with animals.
My requirements were relatively simple in comparison. I want easy mechanics with no accidental interactions. Point and Pinch mechanics are my choices, as they are particular motions.
Use the wrist as a menu target. That bit of elegant UX designed by Microsoft is something that I hope becomes a standard.
From paper to presentation, I spent about two hours drafting the following:
After reviewing the basic design sketch and the UX mechanics with my small human, I received the following injunction and polite request, "OK, momma, now I want to be able to mix and match my forest, and may I have this by Christmas?"
Next steps: download Unity Mars and brush up on my C#.
Cheers!
